Holiday Tips

From the table to the tree, holiday trimmings can be potentially dangerous to your pets. Please review these tips and remember, prevention is the best medicine!

  1. Don't give your pet table scraps. Although this holds true throughout the year, holiday foods tend to be rich and fatty, increasing the chances of vomiting, diarrhea and pancreatitis.

  2. Bones are not safe treats. Don't offer your dog turkey bones (which can splinter) or ham bones (which can get caught on the jaw).

  3. Grapes, raisins, onions and macadamia nuts all contain unknown toxins which are potentially dangerous to your pet.

  4. Many popular holiday plants are poisonous to your pets. Ingestion of mistletoe or holly berries may cause vomiting and diarrhea. Poinsettias can cause mouth irritation.

  5. Decorations are dangerous. Ribbon, string, yarn, bows and tinsel can cause intestinal obstruction, especially in cats.

  6. It's the little things... Small toys, stocking stuffers and ornaments are all easily consumed due to their size, but can cause obstruction. Glass ornaments can cut the mouth and damage the intestinal tract.

  7. Lights and electrical cords can cause life threatening issues if chewed.

  8. Chocolate is toxic to pets! If your pet does ingest chocolate, call your veterinarian and be sure to inform them of the type (dark chocolate is more dangerous), the quantity, and whether or not wrappers were also consumed.

  9. Both antifreeze and windshield washer fluid are toxic to animals. Be sure to keep these items covered and stored up high in your garage. If you suspect your pet has ingested either, you must contact your veterinarian immediately.

  10. Take time to enjoy the holidays with your pet. Don't forget, the holidays are stressful for your pet too. Set aside time to spend with your pet and ensure he or she gets proper exercise.
